James Henry 'Nip" Winters

Piedmont Baseball and Softball representatives were invited to the dedication of a historic plaque in Hockessin Village. The plaque located just adjacent to the Piedmont playing fields on Valley Road honors former Hockessin resident and Negro league pitcher James Henry ‘Nip’ Winters. A left- handed pitcher Nip Winters was known for his wild style and pitching speed. His career spanned the years 1919-1933. He played for a variety of teams including the Homestead Grays and appeared in the Negro League World Series on a few occasions pitching four complete games in one World Series.
