Dear Piedmont Players and Families,

Piedmont has been operating as a recreational youth baseball program at New Castle County's Swift Park fields in Hockessin Delaware since 1976.  Originally sanctioned with Little League Baseball, we became affiliated with Babe Ruth Baseball, Inc. in 1992.

We are planning another fun and exciting baseball and softball season in 2011!  As we look forward to yet another great year at the ballpark, I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the many successes Piedmont enjoyed in 2010.

Once again, we enjoyed a very successful year for Piedmont baseball and softball league in many areas:

  • Participation
    • 1,220 players and 90 teams in three divisions: Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, and Softball
    • 64 teams in Cal Ripken (863 players), 10 teams in Babe Ruth (125 players), and 16 teams in Softball over 3 age groups (230 players)
    • Large Fall Ball participation - 330 players over 24 teams
    • Piedmont is the largest youth baseball program in the state and the largest organization in the mid-Atlantic region
  • Regular Season
    • 90 regular season teams, a record 14 summer teams participated in tournament play.
    • Approximately 1,450 games played
    • Opening day ceremonies at Cal Ripken.  Thanks to several Piedmont graduates playing high school baseball, which attended the ceremonies and were recognized as they shook hands with our 5-12 YO’s.
    • Piedmont baseball and softball was highlighted by the Phillies pre-game show, behind the Pinstripes in May.
  • Managers and Coaches
    • 500 volunteers supporting over 90 teams
    • Good quality of coaching and leadership for the kids – reinforcing our Piedmont goals
    • Coaching clinics, Successful Training at the Blue Rocks. Over 800 players attended. Chris Connelly, Chris Eddy, Tony Longueira, former Blue Rocks players assisted in the event!
    • CPR training offered to all coaches in 2010.
Tournament PlayPiedmont hosted the 9YO, 11YO and 12YO State Tournaments.
    • Very successful state tournament teams at all age levels
    • Piedmont won state tournaments at the boys 9 YO, 11YO, 12 YO 46’ 60’
    • Softball 10U defeated Bear and won the state championship!
    • The 11 YO team advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship and won Piedmont’s 1st regional championship since 2006.
    • Piedmont baseball began an 8YO program in the summer of 2010. The turnout was enough for 3 teams and a state team was selected from the 3 teams after one month of intra-squad games.

In 2011, we have slated several new and exciting initiatives and improvements.

  • Bambino league-new to Piedmont in 2011-4 YO league instructional program!!
  • Coaches clinics and a new program to enhance our player’s skills learned during the season
  • Expanded field facility at HB DuPont, for 46’60, 50’70 and babe Ruth
  • Continued development of our Babe Ruth 13-18 YO league
  • Added security at the Valley Road Softball and Babe Ruth complex
  • Cal Ripken League Skills Initiatives-In 2011 the Cal Ripken Division Director and Commissioners will ensure the league structure is coordinated by the required age levels. This will ensure our player’s skill program will be maximized. See the detail in the newsletter for information.
  • Wood bat tournament in our NL and Babe Ruth Divisions

With the 2011 season just around the corner, we are excited about the prospects of another great season at the ballpark! Piedmont Baseball and Softball is a volunteer league, supported by our great parents and the community! We are very thankful for each and every one of our volunteers.

From our team managers and their assistants, umpires, sponsors, board members, and all other volunteers, on behalf of the board of directors, we thank you for all that you do to bring the game of baseball and softball to our children and the community. I look forward to seeing you at the ballpark soon.
